2003/04
Consolation Playoffs
With 14 teams entering the 2003/04 season and no tiering we decided at
the league meeting to have a consolation playoffs for the teams that
finished 9th through 12th. As it worked out the Supervillains who finished
9th opted out and due to poor turnout by the Aces over the final 5 games
of the season the Stingrays were rewarded with the final spot. It was set
up as a single elimination, with the Underdogs facing the Stingrays and
the Raiders facing the Phantoms. In the first games the Phantoms ended up
having a poor turnout and forfeited to the Raiders while the Stingrays
backed by Justin Faykosh in net gave a surprising effort to the
Underdogs. The Underdogs with 4 late goals won the game 6-1.
The final was set with the Underdogs to face the Raiders. The game saw
the Raiders come back from 3-0 and 4-3 deficits to force OT in the first
ever Consolation Playoffs. But a team who never lead during the game would
not win on this night as a long shot by Colin Jones 8 minutes into OT,
through a screen would beat Cory Albino as Power Play for the Underdogs
was about to expire.
It turned out to be a great game and I hope the teams involved enjoyed
themselves. Here are the stats from the games.
